Challenging the overload culture

Challenging the overload cultureTemily Badilla - Senior Customer Experience Specialist - SunExpress

This week, I came across a 2020 HBR article that mentions overload culture as the main reason why women don’t advance in their careers, followed by accommodations that undermine our development, biases, and equity. Shocking at first, but not entirely surprising, especially considering that only 7.8% of S&P 500 companies, 10.4% of Fortune 500, and 9% of Russell 3000 are led by women.*

It doesn’t matter if you have a family or live alone with your plants, the unequal assignment of tasks in professional environments is a reality. How many of us have been assigned or have seen other women take on the team’s administrative burden, or even prepare the coffee?

I looked for possible solutions, and honestly, I was frustrated to read “task prioritization” as if this were a case of poor time management. So here’s a different approach for you:

Teamwork 2.0

Angus Dawson and Katy George explore an approach aimed at managing collaboration in today’s dynamic context, based on five core principles.

  1. Continuous Experimentation and Learning Foster a culture where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities. Implement quick feedback cycles to continuously assess and improve processes and outcomes.
  2. Analyze and Adapt Monitor the progress of team members and make informed decisions. Encourage flexibility and the readiness to change course when necessary.
  3. Improve in Real-Time Implement regular review and improvement meetings, where team members can discuss what is working and what isn’t. Promote a mindset of constant, proactive improvement. If you work agile, this is the same as retrospective meetings.
  4. Complex Collaboration Provide training in intercultural communication and collaboration skills. Use technologies that facilitate remote collaboration and ensure all team members are aligned on their goals and work methods.
  5. Reaffirm Core Principles Cultivate an environment of trust and open communication, where all team members feel valued and heard.
